The “General Condition” group was created by young artists Bondero (Vadym Bondarenko), Igor Gusev and Yulia Depeshmod in the early nineties. The association existed for only a few years, but managed to enter the history of Odesa modern art with its actions. Soon Igor Gusev and Vadym Bondarenko became known not only for their activities as part of the group, but also for their individual projects. In addition, Igor Gusev engaged in curatorial activities, organizing an underground gallery Norma and the Art-Raiders movement, and is now one of the most well-known Ukrainian artists.

The “Boat” action was held by the group in 1993 near the fountain of the Main Public City Garden of Odesa. At the beginning, two men and a young girl solemnly carry out a large painting the size of a person. They set the painting on the garden path against the background of small still lifes offered for sale by various artists. This picture shows the famous battleship Potemkin. After that, Vadym and Igor cut out the canvas of the picture and divide it in half. The girl is holding a stretcher with a picture on it. The stretcher in honor of such an important event is decorated with artificial flowers. The men make two fairly large boats from the removed canvas, similar to those that children usually make of paper. The artists carefully raise their boats and very solemnly bring them closer to the fountain. At this time the fountain was turned off and its large round bowl was just a pool. The boys likewise solemnly and carefully let the boats float in the pool. At this time, the fountain is put into the action and children boats look very nice among the powerful jets, and the artists stand and look at it proudly.

The “General Condition” group held two actions dedicated to the history of the legendary “Potemkin” and its influence on modern times. They regard the history of this ship as rather pathetical – it is not for nothing its image is decorated with flowers. But by creating children’s boats of a pictured battleship, the artists are probably trying to give a new peaceful life to the warship. This action also highlights the process of transforming a piece of art out of a traditional drawing to a three-dimensional object. It shows that in the hands of creators, a flat picture can turn into something new and unexpected.
