Andríy Marynyuk is an Odésa artist and designer. He was born in 1964, in Odésa he began his creative activity and lived. It was the time when a unique phenomenon of modern art — “Odésa conceptualism” arose in our city. Artists created symbolist drawings and accompanied them with texts (mostly ironic and analytical). Hiding behind sometimes sad irony they tried to make the viewer reflect on the complex masterpieces of art. Andrii Marynyuk was familiar with a group of conceptualists, collaborated with them for some time, and began to consider the implementation of the text into a visual work as an effective technique for achieving the set goal.

The work “Zmózh” was created by Andrii Marynyuk in 1991. In the centre and along the small picture ZMÓZH is written in large white letters. The main part of the work has a blue background. Under the inscription, below, a wavy line highlights a small red part. Above the inscription, a tangle of unknown hieroglyphs is depicted in gold. Below the inscription, on a red background, there are gamma symbol, letter A and various figures – one resembles a human silhouette, others are fantastic.

The main emphasis of the work is on the word ZMÓZH; other details are its decorations. The author invents a neologism (a word that does not exist), but we understand it well.

ZMÓZH (BE ABLE) is a slogan. It is a call to a person to gather his/her strength, to do what he should have done a long time ago, but could not. Andrii was a very docile and cultured person. Thus, the appeal was not only to the viewer but also to himself.

The proposed neologism is successful and can be a motto or a slogan for many. It is about the ability of a person to rise above his/her capabilities, to find the strength for global changes — to create a different way of life and creativity.
