The Fómsky group is a duo of two Odesa artists: Íhor Kamínnyk and Pável Foménko. The group actively worked in the early 90s. Their work was close to the most popular trend of modern Odésa art — conceptualism. The group did not last long, and after the breakup, the artists did not contact each other.
One of the few works of the group that gained popularity, the work “I Declare War on Russia”, was created in 1989.
Dark storm clouds are realistically depicted on the entire canvas measuring 100×150 cm, against which the bright red inscription “I declare war on Russia” can be seen in the lower part of the painting. The inscription is made in capital letters.
This picture of Odesans was created in Russia under the impression of the radical imperial views of the citizens of this country. For many generations, Russians have assured themselves and the whole world of their intellectual and cultural superiority. Therefore, it was surprising for most Russians to learn that there are people (even entire nations) who do not like their “advanced” state. Then, the thesis about the envy of other nations and opposition to “great” Russia was added to the myth of superiority.
In this way, self-isolation took place, in which they still believed in their unique genius, while everyone around did not recognize it. They hold the belief that the whole world is jealous of Russia’s super goal, its mission of the new Third Rome, its power and righteousness. That is why it does have countless enemies.
If you think about who, in this situation, could lead all the peoples of the planet, who do not like Russia so much and can declare war on it for this, then the answer immediately arises: only the Lord.
This is the main point of the authors: “If you think that the whole world is against you, then be consistent – admit that God is also against it». And live with it.
