Mirages of Calypso Enchanted by the Depths: Dmytro Dulfan

Dmytro Dulfan’s art is a plunge into the abyss, a journey without a final port. It is a ritual that does not lead us to the light but leaves us captive in the darkness, where the world of shadows engulfs reality. His works echo the call of Calypso—the underwater goddess who both seduces and confines us within the realms of the unattainable. The exhibition space resembles ocean waters, with artworks as fragments of a shattered myth, pieces of a life dissolved in the waves.

Dulfan sought answers in the extremes of human existence, in places where art dissolves into the abyss of the corporeal and the mystical, where the boundary between life and death, between creation and destruction, is erased. His most famous works, the so-called “lamps,” symbolize emptiness—decaying bodies and ideas that fail to take form but continue to pulsate in space, vibrating in tune with those who gaze upon them. These are not mere objects but traces of the invisible, breaking through from the other side of reality. He creates an alternate dimension where time stops and transforms into space, and every attempt to find oneself becomes an act of merciless self-destruction.

Dulfan surrenders to art as a means of exorcism, striving to break free from the underwater nymph’s hold and overcome misunderstanding and creative isolation. The romanticism of Calypso is a fatal allure. In a mythological context, Calypso does not merely imprison Odysseus—she erases his history, tempting and delaying him in a world where reality dissolves into dreams. Dulfan remains captive to his unrealized dreams. His art is a constant struggle between the desire to touch fantasy and the impossibility of materializing it in the physical world.

For Dulfan, art becomes a catastrophe—a collapse, a rupture between what could have been and what is. He transforms his descent into the abyss into the driving force of his creativity, where a catastrophe dissolved in time becomes the only way to approach a dream. His works are fantasies or fragments of what could have been something greater but stopped at the threshold of incompleteness. There are no finished stories here—only endless mirages lost in the depths.
